PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Visiting Technology Coordinator
ESLARP- University of Illinois 02/ 2002- present
Coordinate Network Systems in NTAC (Neighborhood Technical Assistance) and Digital ESL (East Saint Louis), a project funded by the University of Illinois designed to extend computer and technology resources throughout East St. Louis and surrounding area, a predominantly African-American community. Provide technical support troubleshooting, training, server administration and web design.

Work in direct collaboration with the University of Illinois’s School of Library and Information Science and Prairienet Community Networking to provide technology assistance (troubleshooting), workshops and technical training. Coordinate various Digital ESL collaborative projects including web development, computer training, development of wireless network, preparing candidates to take A+ certificate exam, technical meeting and work with volunteers funded by AmeriCorps program.

Provide technical assistance for the Digital ESL Partners (about 30 organizations each possessing an average of 20 computers), and serve as a contact liaison between these partners and University of Illinois faculty and researchers in the area of technology, business consulting, library and questions related to community endeavors.

Webmaster Graduate Assistant

Handled day-to-day Webmaster concerns for the University Library System. Answer email questions from faculty members and library staff related to online publishing. Provided help on main library gateway web pages, and on department web pages when needed. Dealt with technical problems that involve online access to the University’s library resources. Entered materials into the university databases. Wrote scripts to handle special needs. Gathered information to help determine future Gateway designs, such as usability testing, reviewing other sites, etc.


Reference Assistant

Translated records in Russian and performed data entry into DRA (major university library database); organized databases of special records and performed clerk tasks as needed; provided bibliographic references using print and electronic sources to identify specialized materials. Assisted a team to redesigning library web site.

Computer Trainer
Prairienet Network, University of Illinois, 1/1999 -2/2000
Provided computer training and user support to low-income adults in Champaign-Urbana community; assisted in developing, and translating print and technology-based instructional materials into Spanish. Taught internet searching skills, web design, word processing, electronic mail usage and using authoring and presentation software; taught and developed course on basic computer skills in Spanish to low-income Latina/o families of Champaign-Urbana.

Provided online and print references for patrons in accounting, economics and business fields; assisted in providing course specific instruction to the College of Accounting, Business Administration and Economics and selecting print and electronic business sources. Performed duties using marketing, linguistic and computer skills; updated an electronic glossary to create a new multilingual database; regularized entries to be integrated into a standard multilingual database format; participated in meetings with computer programmers. Assigned correct Portuguese translation in the company’s database; performed technical French translation when necessary.

Graduate Counselor
Office of Minority Students Affairs, Champaign, Illinois 1977-1999
Provided academic and personal counseling to African-American and Latina/o students who were either freshmen or on academic probation. Met regularly with students to discuss the progress in their school work. Served as a liaison between students’ parents and the university.

Exercised outreach for students experiencing academic and personal difficulties. Made referrals to several units on-campus that could assist students. Prepared files that contained detailed reports on each student. Entered student information into the office database.

Teaching Assistant
Portuguese Department, University of Illinois, 1/1996-1997
Created and taught a course of Portuguese language and literature that addressed linguistics issues, cultural concerns and syntax variations across cultures, historical periods and the language’s evolution from Latin; performed translation of documents and created syllabi (for intermediary level language course) and a support course packet for the class.

Taught variations of contextual terminology with supportive test sample; lectured on Portuguese variations spoken in Africa, Europe, America and Asia leading to the origin of Portuguese-Creole; led intellectual discussions with Brazilian instructors on language history and its impact of contemporary written materials.

Organized corporate information, archives and policies; provided competitive analysis, market research and created new financial products to address market demands; managed human resources; trained staff as needed in subjects such as basic accounting, budgeting, insurance techniques based on international insurance codes, and marketing of financial products; monitored workflow assigning appropriate tasks to staff to balance workload and meet client deadlines; assigned daily requests to research staff; negotiated reinsurance packets (insurance contracts that share risks among major foreign companies oversee).

Supervised financial policies (debt collection, credit analysis, budgeting) and oversaw a process of privatization.
