Animal Researcher Training Checklist
In accordance with the Animal Welfare Regulations, Public Health Service Policy, and as outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, all personnel conducting research involving animals at the University of California, Santa Barbara and its satellite facilities must be appropriately trained and qualified to perform procedures described in each protocol. Below is a checklist to assist animal researchers with completing their requisite training and gain access to campus animal facilities.
All necessary training must be completed prior to performing any work with animals. All Researchers Must Print and Return this Form to the IACUC Office.
I. Mandatory of all new animal researchers:
- Prior to beginning training, email the IACUC office, iacuc@lifesci.ucsb.edu, with your name, the Principal Investigator, and the protocol(s) you will be working on. (Please note that only Faculty Members or Professional Researchers can be Principal Investigators, not Post-Doctoral Fellows or Graduate Students)
- Log on to the external web-based training program, Citiprogram. Complete the "Working with the IACUC" module.
- Read through the Zoonotic Diseases materials on the IACUC website.
- Complete the Occupational Health and Safety form and UC Davis Risk Assessment Tool. Return the completed form to the IACUC Office.
II. Approval to work in the Psychology Vivarium requires additional specialized training:
If you will be working in the Psychology Vivarium you must complete the Psychology Vivarium Respiratory Fit Protection Directions
III. Approval to work on most animal protocols requires additional specialized training:
- If you will be working in a research laboratory, you must complete the EH&S Online Lab Safety Training Program.
- If you will be working with mice or rats, you must complete the "Minimizing/Reducing Pain and Distress in Laboratory Mice and Rats" Citiprogram modules.
- If you will be working with mice, rats, guinea pigs, hamsters, rabbits, cats, or amphibians, you must complete the corresponding "Working with…..In Research Settings" Citiprogram modules.
- If you will be working with fish, wild birds, or non-traditional lab animals, you must read through the corresponding Guidelines under the Training Section.
- If you will be performing any type of surgery on animals (survival or non-survival), you must complete the "Aseptic Surgery" Citiprogram module.
- If you will need training on animal procedures, you must contact the Animal Resource Center at (805) 893-2333.
IV. Upon completion of all appropriate components, you must return the Training Checklist form to the IACUC Office along with a completed Occupational Health and Safety Form to obtain Security Access to the appropriate facilities. V. Mandatory of all continuing animal researchers seeking training re-authorization every three years:
- Log on to the external web-based training program, Citiprogram. Complete the "Working with Animals in Biomedical Research-Refresher Course." This training will provide another three years of certification.
