Using a high-speed video of the complex motions of coffee-filled cups carried by people, Rouslan Krechetnikov, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, investigated the effects of walking speed on coffee spills: a problem that bridges a variety of fundamental scientific issues, from fluid mechanics, to the complex biology of walking. The results were presented at the November meeting of the American Physical Society, and might result in improved cup designs to control spilling.
