The total funding awarded to sponsored projects at UCSB in 2011–12, from July 1 to June 30, was $217 million.
UCSB received $171.5 million in direct and indirect federal funding in 2011–12.
Awards in the Indirect Federal category were given initially to another institution for a multi-institution project, then flowed through for work performed at UCSB. Of the $28.5 million in indirect federal flowthrough, non-profit sponsors provided $5.8 million; UC, $4.5 million; industry, $6.4 million; Higher Education, $11.4 million; and state and local government, $0.4 million. Thus, 79 percent of the total sponsored project funding originates with the federal government.
Direct federal funding amounts to about 66 percent of the campus' extramural total in 2011-12. The National Science Foundation provided more funding to UCSB in 2011-12—$51.1 million—than did any other agency.
