The total funding awarded to sponsored projects in 2012-2013, from July 1 to June 30, is $165 million.
UCSB received $134.6 million in direct and indirect federal funding in 2012–13.
Awards in the "Indirect Federal" category were given initially to another institution for a multi-institution project, then flowed through for work performed at UCSB. Of the $24.4M in indirect federal flowthrough, nonprofit sponsors provided $2.7M; industry, $7.0M; state & local government, $.6M; higher education, $9.3M and UC, $4.8M. Thus 82 percent of the total sponsored project funding originates with the federal government.
Direct federal funding amounts to about 67 percent of the campus' extramural total in 2012-13. The National Science Foundation provided more funding to UCSB in 2012-13—$42.9 million—than did any other agency.
