Olivia Walling, J.D., Ph.D.
June 11, 2013, 4:00-5:30pm
Elings 1601

*Pizza will be served*

Description:

Asked to name the prototypical case of research misconduct, most would say it's misrepresenting data.  But, plagiarism is actually the most common form of misconduct.  Olivia will address the standards that funding agencies use to determine whether plagiarism has occurred.  In addition, she will help you understand how plagiarism can occur without intent, how to avoid plagiarism and charges of plagiarism, and how to understand your obligations for giving appropriate credit to others in the scientific community.  Please come also with topics that you would like Olivia to address in responsible conduct of research seminars in the coming academic year.  Significant topics in RCR might include things like:  how to whistleblow and still have a career, how to develop lab policies that promote fairness and a positive working environment, ethical issues in publication, effective collaboration, and data ownership and management.
