Spend a weekend at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center with UCSB colleagues to:

  • Develop and write competitive individual and collaborative grant proposals that integrate HSI and/or AANAPISI undergraduate educational and research interventions and related topics, and
  • Form new networks and collaborations across STEM, social sciences, humanities, arts, and education faculty.

Several federal and private funding agencies provide grant opportunities to improve student success at Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSI) and Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI). This professional development program will support UCSB faculty in creating individual and collaborative team proposals for HSI and AANAPSI-related projects and research.

Program and Retreat Details

The program will include two cohorts, consisting of 20 faculty each (40 faculty total). Each cohort will attend one retreat on either of the following dates:

  • Retreat 1: January 21-24, 2022
  • Retreat 2: May 6-8, 2022 (note that this is Mother’s Day weekend)

Each participant will also attend a virtual presentation about HSI/MSI funding opportunities prior to each writing retreat. These are scheduled for:

  • Friday, December 17, 12 PM - 1 PM
  • Friday, April 1, 12 PM - 1 PM

All expenses for travel and lodging will be paid by UCSB for your attendance at a 3-day intensive writing retreat hosted at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center. Each retreat begins on Friday afternoon, and ends Monday after lunch. Each faculty participant will also receive a $2,500 stipend as summer salary. Retreat programming will include:

  • Several hours of dedicated and supported writing time
  • Brief presentations about best practices for student success at MSIs and UCSB institutional student data
  • Mini-workshops and support from writing experts and coaches Support from the UCSB research development team in conceptualizing proposals and determining funding fit with the various agencies
  • Consultations with UCSB ethnic studies and education scholars on developing an evidence-based proposal to address challenges at MSIs

Participants will come away from the retreat with a well-developed concept, a proposal outline or draft, and detailed timeline for subsequent action items that lead to proposal submission.
