NIH RPPR Update: Ability for Agency to Request Additional Materials for Interim RPPR via Commons Coming September 20, 2017 - A new capability will be added to eRA Commons during a software release on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. There is no anticipated downtime during this release.  Awarding agencies will be able to request additional materials for an Interim RPPR from the principal investigator (PI) and signing official (SO) via eRA Commons. In turn, the SO will be able to submit the additional materials via eRA Commons, in a process that is similar to the Final Progress Report Additional Materials (FRAM) process.

The SO and PI will receive an email request from the program official at the awarding agency. They will also see the Interim Progress Report Addition Materials (IRAM) link requesting the information on the Status Results screen, in the Available Actions column. As with the RPPR, a PD/PI (or Contact PI, in the case of multiple PIs) can enter the IRAM. However, only the SO can submit an IRAM to the agency.

For detailed information and screenshots, please see the Latest News section in the eRA Commons online help, following the release.

Heads up! eRA Commons users with more than one account will get an email in late summer to log in and verify their preferred account. Multiple accounts with scientific roles (PI, Trainee, ASST, etc.) will be combined into one account, important for ensuring you get credit for all your grant awards, reporting purposes, and identification of reviewer service for continuous submission. See Nexus article.

NOT-OD-15-102 - Consideration of Sex as a Biological Variable in NIH-funded Research

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is committed to improving the health outcomes of men and women through support of rigorous science that advances fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems.  Sex and gender play a role in how health and disease processes differ across individuals, and consideration of these factors in research studies informs the development and testing of preventive and therapeutic interventions in both sexes.  This notice focuses on NIH's expectation that scientists will account for the possible role of sex as a biological variable in vertebrate animal and human studies.  Clarification of these expectations is reflected in plans by NIH's Office of Extramural Research (OER) to update application instructions and review questions; once approved by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), these updates will take effect for applications submitted for the January 25, 2016, due date and thereafter.  Please refer to NOT-OD-15-103 for further consideration of NIH expectations about enhancing reproducibility through rigor and transparency.

The below question is posted specifically as it has come up often:

  1. We had a postdoc work on a project for more than one person month, but she has since left our organization and she does not have a Commons ID. Are we supposed to create one for her?

In this situation, report the post doc in Section D. - Participants, but select "Other" as the role and enter "postdoc who left institution without Commons ID."
